St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum, Klamath Weed), has been in traditional use since the time of ancient Greece. In modern herbalism it is used to treat mild to moderate depression and anxiety disorders. Recently, there has been a significant amount of research supporting efficacy of St. John's Wort for mild to moderate depression. Some even have argued that St. John’s Wort is safer and more effective for mild depression than conventional antidepressants. St. John's Wort's mechanism of action is believed to be similar to that of the conventional antidepressants. It is believed that it reduces neural uptake of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine, etc. but unlike the conventional antidepressants it appears to act on a much broader range of neurotransmitters (see PubMed for more). St. John's Wort's is believed to have interaction with certain drugs by increasing or decreasing their absorption.
