Found in: Phytonutrients (Phytochemicals) | Antioxidants | Grape (Seed and more) ResveratrolResveratrol is the substance that is most often credited for the beneficial effects of the red wine (the so called "French Paradox"). Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound that is present in a number of plants, but in red wine it primarily comes from the grape skins. Studies show that Resveratrol is an effective antioxidant and that it may be beneficial for cardiovascular health. It is also actively studied at Harvard Medical School for potential anti-aging benefits similar to caloric restriction. As a supplement Resveratrol is mostly extracted from the Japanese knotweed ( Polygonum cuspidatum, also called Hu Zhang). Since Resveratrol is not the only substance found in red wine and grapes that may have health promoting benefits, many manufactures have "Full Spectrum" formulations that include these compounds (such as other polyphenols and Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins / OPCs).
