Nicotinic acid is the free form of niacin (Vitamin B-3). High doses of niacin (as nicotinic acid or inositol hexaniacinate) are commonly used to lower elevated LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglyceride (fat) levels in the blood and increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. However, medical supervision is advised, because high doses of niacin may produce side effects, such as an itching and burning rash (flush).
