It has a long history of social and ceremonial use in the Pacific Islands. Kava is perhaps best known for its relaxing qualities and is used to treat restlessness, stress symptoms and mild anxiety disorders. Kava is not addictive and its active compounds (kavapyrones or kavalactones) are well studied. Recently there have been a few reports of severe liver toxicity in people who took kava supplements (mostly in Europe). While cases are rare and cause and effect link with kava has not been conclusively established, severity of the liver damage prompted FDA to issue an advisory to the public of potential liver damage. A recent study at the University of Hawaii has suggested a compound found in the stem peelings and leaves of the kava plant (but not the roots) may be responsible for liver damage. Traditional kava drinkers only use the root of the plant, but the research suggests that at the peak of the market some European manufacturers may have used stem bark of kava plants to create extracts that may be responsible for the liver damage reported.
