Healthy Weight Management

Wouldn’t it be just great if those “lose 30 pounds in 30 days” ads were true? Just pop a pill – no effort, no exercise, no side effects – just get back to the tasty food and our busy lives and see the pounds melt away. If only it were true! If you think that the people behind the ads really know something that we don’t, then you have no reason to read any further. However, if you made it this far just think about it – when did you hear about a drug with absolutely no side effects, or when was the last new herb invented?..

The truth of the matter is to lose weight (i.e. fat, not water) your body needs to spend more energy than it takes in and all of our previous evolution has programmed it to resist it. Our bodies require a certain amount of energy for basic processes such as heart beat, breathing, keeping our body temperature, etc. It varies from person to person and declines somewhat with age, but typically it is slightly under 2000 Calories and let’s say that with some minimal daily activities of picking up groceries and walking from the parking lot to the office it rounds up to 2000 Calories.

If you stopped eating completely, at 9 Calories per gram of fat, 2000 Calories would give you half a pound of fat loss. The ad promised you that you would loose one pound a day, or 4000 Calories. Exercise can certainly help, running for an hour will burn 650 Calories – still a little shy of 4000 Calories promised. Did the ad imply that you would not be eating and running for three hours a day? In essence what they say is that you will metabolize an additional 4000 Calories, or triple your metabolism. They better send you a radiator to attach to yourself to dissipate all that extra heat you will produce...

The fact is to lose weight and keep it off some lifestyle change is required. If you are like most people, a 50-100 Calories adjustment will stop your weight gain, and everything above this will go towards your weight loss. This is just ten extra minutes of exercise or a couple of cookies fewer per day. Diet supplements can help you make the adjustment easier. They can help you control appetite, give you a simple balanced meal replacement or boost your energy and your metabolism somewhat on a short-term basis. Please see the product groups below for ideas on how you can supplement your diet and exercise program.
