Found in: Sulfur | Glucosamine and Chondroitin | Glucosamine with Chondroitin GlucosamineGlucosamine is a glucose modified with an amino group (-NH2). Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar and is primarily found in and around the cells of cartilage. Studies suggest that glucosamine helps relieve pain by enhancing proteoglycan synthesis, which is impaired in osteoarthritic cartilage. Glucosamine is often combined with two other popular joint supplements, Chondroitin and MSM. Most of the glucosanine products are derived from shells of shellfish (see Vegetarian Glucosamine for non-shellfish glucosamine). Since it is derived from shellfish shells, not shellfish flesh that causes the shellfish related allergies, it is not expected to cause shellfish related allergies. In fact, glucosamine is a well tolerated and we know of no reported allergies. However, since it is an amino sugar derived from shellfish, it is recommended that people who are allergic to shellfish, diabetic, taking blood-thinning medication, or who are pregnant, should consult a health-care professional before taking glucosamine.
