Calcium malate is calcium bound to malic (fruit) acid. It is typically used in combination with citrate as calcium citrate/malate or CCM. Studies indicate that this combination may have superior bio-availability compared to other forms of calcium. However, just like in the case of calcium citrate, it takes about 4-6 capsules/tablets to obtain 1000 mg of elemental calcium. Also if the product contains calcium citrate, it should not be used with aluminum-containing antacids, because the amount of aluminum absorbed into the blood stream may be increased significantly.
