Found in: Amino Acids 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)The body converts 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) amino acid into an important brain chemical serotonin. 5-HTP is not commonly available in food. It is made by the body from an essential amino acid L-Tryptophan that can only be obtained from food. Because of its effect on serotonin, 5-HTP may be helpful in a wide variety of conditions related to low serotonin levels, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, fibromyalgia and obesity. Because of a potential for drug interactions (particularly with drugs acting on serotonin such as Prozac) and side effects, a qualified medical supervision is advised while taking 5-HTP. Specific interactions include: antidepressant medications, carbidopa, sumatriptan, tramadol and zolpidem. Why not L-Tryptophan supplement?L-Tryptophan is an essential (can only be obtained from food) amino acid that naturally occur in foods, such as milk, meat fish and poultry products. L-Tryptophan was a popular dietary supplement in the 80s. However, in 1989 a contaminated batch of L-Tryptophan was implicated in an outbreak of eosinophilic myalgia syndrome (a potentially fatal disorder). Epidemiological study Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has traced the incidences of EMS to a particular manufacturer in Japan and has identified a number of trace contaminants in the implicated batches (CDC analysis report). As of 2001, FDA maintains that the scientific evidence is not conclusive to establish that the EMS outbreak of 1989 was caused by contaminants rather than high doses of L- Tryptophan itself (2001 FDA paper).
